FastPort Multiprotocol Print Servers

Digi International

The Fastport Multiprotocol Print Servers are two-port, multiprotocolnetwork print servers for Ethernet networks. The FastPort supports UNIX,NetWare, and EtherTalk environments, and will also support printing fromLAN Server and LAN Manager networks when used with MiLAN's FastSpoolsoftware. Three uplinks on the rear of the unit provide connections forRJ-45, BNC, or AUI cabling. Flash EPROMs for easy field upgrades and afive year warranty are standard. The FastPort will support 60K+Bps ofthroughput.UNIX users can print to the FastPort directly using the standard printerdaemon (LPD) directly, or they can use MiLAN's sophisticated hostsoftware to customize their UNIX printing services. The FastPortsupports all flavors of UNIX. MiLAN also provides two choices for easyFastPort management. A telnet connection allows configuration of the IPaddress and other parameters available via the serial monitor, as well asthe ability to check the status of attached printers. Today's morecomplex management requirements are met by the FastPort's SNMP supportwhich provides a window into the FastPort's traffic-handlingcapabilities.Every FastPort is self-configuring for, and fully compatible with, NovellNetWare 2.X, 3.X, and 4.X. For configuration management, the FastPortoffers your choice of standard PCONSOLE installation, or complete controlwith MiLAN's Advanced Configuration Tool (ACT) for NetWare. ACT providesinstallation, configuration, and monitoring of the FastPort, Novellqueues, and print servers, including printer and queue status. Inaddition, the FastPort supports all four frame type (802.3, Ethernet-II,802.2, and SNAP) reconnects to Novell servers when they are rebooted, andsupports encrypted passwords. Notification in case of printer errors isalso supported. The FastPort supports all the popular Macintosh applications and Appleoperating systems 6.0.5 and greater. This completely "plug-and-print"unit supports high-speed printing through parallel ports to allPostScript printers by supplying the bidirectional information necessaryto achieve superior throughput. MiLAN's advanced utilities allowmodification of the default parameters, such as the name of the printer, zone, font information, and parallel and serial port parameters, toenhance the FastPort's operation. Users can print simultaneously throughboth the serial and parallel ports on the FastPort using the standardLaserWriter printer driver. The FastPort is unique, in that it allowsparallel PostScript printers to be printed to without modifying the Appledriver.
